Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of correspondence, financial and court documents, and postcards relating to the Lumsden-Richardson family in Georgia. Also included is some materials relating to the Simmons family. The correspondence does include some discussion of the Civil War and the Gold Rush.

Biographical / historical:

John L. Richardson (1794-1880) and Susan Waters Simmons (1795-1876 or 1886) had four children: Sophronia Antoinette Richardson (1828-1850), Lavonia Josephine "Joe/Jodie" Richardson (1829-1897), John (1830-?), Ann Freeman Richardson (1834-1868). Much of the correspondence is sent between the siblings and to their parents. Sophronia Richardson married Thomas Read Lumsden and had two sons: John Greer Lumsden (1846-1936) and Jesse Richardson Lumsden (1848-1933). Jesse R. Lumsden went on to have six children, including a daughter named Elizabeth Virginia Lumsden (1893-1984).
