This collection contains correspondence and printed materials regarding the family and associates of Howell Cobb. Corresponents include Mary Ann Cobb, John A. Cobb, David C. Barrow, John B. Lamar, John H. Lumpkin, Lewis Cass, Middleton Pope Barrow.

Biographical / historical:

Howell Cobb was born on September 17, 1815, the son of Sarah Rootes and John Addison Cobb. The Cobb family moved to Athens, Georgia around 1819, where Howell attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1834. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1843 to 1851 and then again in 1855 to 1857. He was the Speaker of the House from 1849 to 1851. He was the governor of Georgia from 1851 to 1853. He served under President Buchanan as the Secretary of Treasury from 1857 to 1860. When Georgia seceded in 1861, he also left, and served as the president of the Provisional Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1862. He was married to Mary Ann Lamar and had twelve children, only six of whom would survive to adulthood.

John Basil Lamar (1812-1862) was a lawyer, politician, and planter, born in Milledgeville, Georgia. Lamar served as an aide to Confederate States Army General Howell Cobb, his brother-in-law and close friend.

David Crenshaw Barrow Sr. (1815-1899) was a planter who resided in Oglethorpe County and Athens, Georgia. He married Sarah Pope (d. 1855), daughter of Middleton Pope. Their children included David Crenshaw, James Middleton Pope, Thomas A., Clara Elizabeth, Ella Patience (Spalding), and Lucy M. (Cobb).
