Scope and content:

Collection includes transcriptions of tapes recorded by Richard Yarbrough each day on his drive home from work which date from July 1993 to September 1996, as well as binders for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and the International Olympic Committee containing meeting minutes, press operations, fact sheets, staff manuals and briefings, news advisories, press releases, venues, contact lists, agreements and policies, federal government projects, and facilities and services. Tapes discusses everyday life, organizational and PR challenges, workplace friction and relevant press coverage. Also included are preliminary mock-ups of the Atlanta Olympics mascot Izzy, an Izzy plush, an archery pictogram tile, and a Centennial Olympic Games silver medal. Silver medals were given to high ranking officials who aided in organizing the Olympic games.

Biographical / historical:

Richard Yarbrough joined the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as managing director of communications in April 1993 till the organization's conclusion in 1996. There he reported to Billy Payne, the president and chief executive officer and was responsible for public, state and federal government relations, and public information and press operations. During the games, he distinguished himself with his handling of the Centennial Park bombing and its aftermath.
