The Georgia-Alabama Investment and Development Company was charted by Ralph Spencer in 1890 to attract manufacturing to Tallapossa, a boom town established during Georgia's first gold rush. Instead, Spencer and several board members embezzled investor funds and the company collapsed in 1892. With over 10,000 investors financially ruined, the scandal gained national attention.
