This collection contains two 18th century framed engravings from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium and two circa 1884 pen and ink composition sketches by Edwin J. Meeker based on Civil War era photographs taken by George N. Barnard.
- Biographical / historical:

Edwin J. Meeker was a late 19th century illustrator whose images accompanied stories published in weekly magazines such as Harpers, Frank Lesley's Newspaper, Johnson's, and other publications. He also created watercolor paintings, as well as illustrations for books and postcards.
Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator. In 1699, she travelled to Dutch Surinam to study tropical insects. Upon her return, she published her drawings and notes in Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium in 1705.
