This collection contains May (Mae) O. Smoak Grist's and Samuel L. Smoak's school records, ephemera, and photographs from their home schools, the Lucy Cobb Institute, and the University of Georgia, as well as George Smoak's University of Georgia farm plat book.

Biographical / historical:

May (Mae) Odiorne Smoak Grist grew up in Athens, Georgia and graduated from the Lucy Cobb Institute in 1899. After attending the Lucy Cobb Institute for an additional year, she went on to become one of the first teachers at the Rabun Gap Industrial School in Rabun Gap, Georgia.

Her brother, Sam L. Smoak, attended the University of Georgia and her father, George W. Smoak worked with the University of Georgia farms.
