Scope and content:

The collection consists of one letter: dated 4 Child's Place, Temple, London, June 8, 1866, to J. A. McHatton, Havana, signed "J. P. Benjamin," regarding payment for some of McHatton's cotton which he had shipped to England through the blockade. The collection also includes a newspaper clipping regarding a copy of Blackstone's Commentaries with Benjamin's autograph.

Biographical / historical:

Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884) was a lawyer and Cabinet official with the Confederate States government during the Civil War. After the war, Benjamin settled in England where he practiced law as a barrister.
