Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of photographs of the installation of a new brick kiln and the clay pit operations, and postcards from Athens and Atlanta.

Biographical / historical:

From incorporation in 1903 until a 1922 fire, the Georgia Brick Company of Athens was a sizable local industry. In 1911 the works installed the controversial Shaw system of dryers and kilns to speed production. The majority of the photographs in this collection were taken to document that installation having been preserved by Ross Graeber, electrician on the project. Also included are postcards, as well as photographs of what are believed to be fellow employees of the Shaw firm installing the system at the Palmer Brick Works in Atlanta. Both works went bankrupt after installation, with the Georgia Brick Company. Today the ruins (largely brick) are a popular sight at the Athens/Clarke Leisure Service's Sandy Creek Nature Center.
