Scope and content:

The collection consists of an engraved pewter plate. The engraving reads, "Georgia Women of Achievement: Sarah Harper Heard 2016 Honoree."

Biographical / historical:

Sarah "Sally" Harper Heard founded the largest free traveling library system on the eastern seaboard. From 1898 until 1955 the Seaboard Airline Railway provided transportation and Sally made sure that the books were on the trains. The books were then distributed to anyone or any community along the railroad route. By 1912, 18,000 books and 38,000 magazines were being circulated throughout the traveling library system.

Georgia Women of Achievement is a statewide organization that is dedicated to publicizing, researching and providing educational materials about the accomplishment of outstanding women in Georgia history. Sarah Harper Heard was honored for her accomplishments by the organization in 2016.
