The collection contains letters written by John G. Abbott to his brother Joseph E. P. Abbott during his service in the 48th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in and around Fort Pulaski, Georgia in 1862.

John G. Abbott was born November 20, 1838 in Tuckaohe, New Jersey and served as a sergeant with the 48th New York Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army in the Civil War through the 1862 seige of Fort Pulaski, and was fatally wounded in the assault on Fort Wagner, Morris Island, South Carolina in 1863.
