James (Jim) E. Butler, Sr. was born on December 27th, 1923. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of eighteen to serve in World War II. After the completion of the war, Butler transferred to the Naval Reserve. For many years, he worked as a mechanical engineer responsible for buildings throughout the state. In 1966, Jim Butler retired from the Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
