Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of a single photograph taken at the Exposition, depicting a large company of men posing in military attire. In the background are men dressed in civilian clothing, including John A. Stephens, who had previously served as a Confederate lieutenant in the 15th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry.

Biographical / historical:

In 1884 New Orleans hosted the World's Fair, officially branded the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. New Orleans was a major hub of the cotton industry and home of the Cotton Exchange, and the "Centennial" portion of the fair's name referred to the earliest known records of an export shipment of cotton from the United States to England in 1784.
