This collection consists of biographical information, correspondence, photographs, printed material, research files, and writings. The correspondence is primarily between Betty Sargent and her family and friends from the 1930s until the early 2000s. There is also material related to the First American-Japanese Student Conference, World War II, and Betty's career with the Georgia Review. The careers and activities of Robert Dell, William Shirer, and Stefan Lux are documented in the correspondence, research files, and writings. A portion of the collection documents the Sargent family troubles involving James Sargent's health.

Betty Sargent (1912-2009) attended the University of Southern California (1930-1934), receiving a Bachelor of Foriegn Service, and served as a delegate to the First American-Japanese Student Conference (1934). In 1937, she took a position as secretary to Robert Dell the chief European correspondent of the Manchester Guardian in Geneva and gained some experience as a contributor to the New York Herald Tribune. She served as a correspondent for the Associated Press in Geneva until September 1941 when she escaped war-torn Europe and returned to the United States. For the remainder of the war, Betty worked for the Office of War Information in the Foreign Information Service Branch. In 1961, Betty and her mother moved to Athens, Georgia, where she began to look for employment. She worked for the Georgia Review from 1964 until 1982. Her involvement in civic organizations, such as the ACLU, Clarke County League of Women Voters, NOW, and UGA Nuclear Freeze Group, increased after her retirement.
