The collections consists of four court documents, circa 1851, from Clarke County, Georgia: Danne Ingles vs. Thomas Hancock, Clarke Superior Court upon foreclosure of mortgage, completed and signed by John J. Huggins as deputy sheriff with order; The State vs. John A. Heard in an indictment for forgery on the charge of passing and paying a forged and counterfeited note; The State vs. Robert Yearly et al, February term 1851, ordered to trial at next term of the court; and a letter regarding Virgil N. Akridge, dec'd vs. Maria M. Akridge, signed by Charles Dougherty and Asa M. Jackson.

Biographical / historical:

John J. Huggins was the Town Commissioner of Athens, Clarke County, Georgia, in the mid-1830s. Asa M. Jackson practiced law and served as the Clarke County Oridnary for almost 50 yers, and was with the 3d GA Regiment during the Civil War in which he was wounded during a battle near Richmond. Charles Dougherty was a judge at the Clarke County Superior Court. The 1850 U. S. Federal Census lists Dannes [Daniel] Ingles as having been born in 1806 and working as a minister in Athens; John A. Heard was a mechanic living in Wilkes; and Robert yearby as having been born in 1822 and working as a farmer and owning slaves. Thomas Hancock moved to Athens around 1819 and was one of the organizers of the town's first Methodist church, also running the Planter and Hancock Hotels.
