Dobbs' letter is addressed to J. S. Fain, Athens, Georgia, November 21, 1865, and is a response to accusations concerning the theft of brandy. Also included is a printed roster of Company E, 11th Regiment.

Stephen C. Dobbs was a sergeant, and later captain, of Company E, 2nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army, of Fannin County. He served during the Civil War from 1861 until his resignation in December of 1863.
