The collection consists of one letter: dated Milledgeville near Augusta, July 24, 1802, to General Samuel Smith, Baltimore, signed "John Milledge," regarding Smith's land speculation interests in Georgia, and an agreement made with the United States Congress and Georgia concerning Western land and treaties made with the Creek Indians for over a million acres of land including the fork of Oconee and Ocmulgee counties.

John Milledge (1757-1818) was an important political figure in Georgia during the Revolutionary War and early national period, holding positions as governor, congressman for four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, and president pro tempore in the U.S. Senate.
