Stephens," regarding a book and Stephens' health; dated Atlanta, Georgia, September 17, 1889, "General Marcus J. Wright War Dept. Washington DC," regarding Col. J. H. Skelton; House of Representative, Atlanta, Georgia letterhead, dated September 25, 1889, "Dear Mollie," signed "J. H. Skelton. The collection also includes a photograph of A. H. Stephens taken in 1879 (copy).

Biographical / historical:

John Hamilton Skelton of Hartwell County, Georgia, was a Major in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, mayor of Hartwell, Georgia, and member of the Georgia House of Representatives (1889-1889).

Alexander Hamilton Stephens (1812-1883) was an American politician from Georgia, served as Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia (pre- and post-Civil War), and was the 50th Governor of Georgia (1882-death in 1883).
