The collection consists of papers of the Stokes family of Madison, Morgan County, Georgia from 1819-1845. The papers mainly contain correspondence including letters to Charles Y. Stokes while a student at Vineville Academy (Madison, Ga.) and the University of Georgia (Athens, Ga.) mostly discussing family news, inquiring about school or Stokes' studies, and activities of literary or social societies. The collection also contains a letter to William S. Stokes from Robert T. Ware (November 1819) describing Ware's trip to Staten Island (N.Y.), quarantine, arrival in Philadelphia (Pa.), and illness; a speech (1845) on patriotism and U.S. history celebrating the 4th of July; and printed material.
