The collection consists of four letters from Arlon S. Atherton: dated Alexandria, Virginia, February 5, 1825, "My dear Susie," regarding excitement over the 13th Amendment; dated U. S. General Court Martial Rooms, North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Virginia, February 9, 1865, "My very dear friend," regarding executions; dated Pro. Marshalls Office, Goldsboro, North Carolina, June 11, 1865, "Dear Susie," regarding Northerners settling in the South; dated Office of City Jail, Goldsboro, North Carolina, July 2, 1865, "My dear Susie," regarding soldiers burning an African American church.

Biographical / historical:

Arlon S. Atherton (1842-1922) was a New Hampshire Lieutenant during the Civil War. During his service, he was promoted five times. He was captured and wounded August 16, 1864 at Deep Bottom Run, Virginia and then paroled September 15, 1864. He married his wife, Susan Caldwell, on December 25, 1865, in Warwick.
