This collection consists of correspondence, research materials, photographs, audio tapes, notes and other records documenting Gladney's work on the letters, life and career of noted Southern author Lillian Smith.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Margaret Rose Gladney is a former associate professor of American studies at the University of Alabama. She spent her career working on issues of social justice and change. She was one of the early professors in the University of Alabama's women's studies departmen helped to craft the master's program in that field. She also helped develop and sustain the African-American studies minor. Dr. Gladney compiled the books How Am I to Be Heard? Letters of Lillian Smith and One Hour.
