The collection consists of one letter: dated Atlanta, October 15, 1870, to "Col. S. McD. Tate," signed "H. E. Colton." Colton writes "…I expect to go up your Road and if you choose to extend the favor of a pass the same will be duly appreciated."

Biographical / historical:

Henry E. Colton (1836-1892), born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, naturalist, geologist, and author of Mountain Scenery: The Scenery of the Mountains of Western North Carolina and Northwestern South Carolina.
