Several of the Thomas family attended Old Oglthorpe University in Atlanta. C.D. Thomas lived in Selma, Alabama in the late 1890s up until 1913, when he was transferred to Atlanta. C.D. Thomas worked for the Southern Railway Company in the 1910s as an executive clerk at the General Freight Department in Atlanta, Georgia. He served in various clerical and official capacities in Atlanta, Chicago, and Cincinnati. In 1935, he was made the general freight agent at Atlanta and then the Assistant Freight Traffic Manager in 1938. In 1941, C.D. Thomas was appointed as freight traffic manager (Freight Head of Southern) at Atlanta. He was married and had two daughters.
