Scope and content:

The collection consists of a diary, letters, photographs, receipts, writings, scrapbooks, legal documents and other material. The letters (1871-1905) refer to both family and business matters. The diary (1879-1883) was kept by Hill and his wife Sallie. One of the scrapbooks concerns prohibition and the other includes material about George R. Barker. The collection also includes a will of Catlett Campbell and other legal documents regarding him.

Biographical / historical:

Walter Barnard Hill (1851-1905) was a Georgia lawyer and educator, and chancellor of the University of Georgia (1899-1905) until his death. He was born in Talbotton, Georgia, received three college degrees, and practiced law in Macon, Georgia, before becoming chancellor at UGA.
