The collection consists of a file kept by Michelle Cliff on Lillian Smith, from 1977-1983. The file consists of correspondence from Cliff, Paula Snelling, George Brockway, and Esther Smith; and papers concerning The Winner Names the Age. The collection also includes a copy of the keynote conference speech "Listening to sounds larger than our own heartbeat: a conference on Lillian Smith," presented by Michelle Cliff at Georgetown University, October 7-9, 1994.

Lillian Smith (1897-1966) was an author, lecturer, and human rights advocate, born in Jasper County, Florida, and resided in Rabun County, Georgia. Her best known fiction piece was the controversial 1944 novel Strange Fruit.
