Scope and content:

The collection consists of letters, newspaper articles, photographs and examples of the poetry relating to the career of Judge Verner. Also included are research materials and writings from Esther and John, plus photographs, newspaper clippings, county records and related materials, about the families of Verner, Arrendall, Bond, and Bowers. Large black-and-white photographs of John Harris Bowers (1836-1909) and wife Elizabeth Rice Bowers (1840-1881), parents of Aaron Newton Bowers and grandparents of Esther Bowers Verner. Certificate of Esther Virginia Bowers graduation from Atlanta Conservatory of Music, 1919. Decatur Bar Association photographs, 1961-1962.

Biographical / historical:

John Early Verner was born in Franklin County, Georgia and attended Canon High School and Atlanta Law School. He was an attorney in DeKalb County, a Notary Public, Ex-Officio JP of Decatur from 1935, Judge of Decatur Recorders Court and Judge of DeKalb Recorders Court (1959-1967). He married Esther Virginia Bowers in 1921 and had one living child with her, Martha Letitia Verner, born in 1929; Letitia married Leonard J. Galati. Esther Virginia Bowers Verner (1896-1982) was a 1914 graduate of Gibson-Mercer Institute in Bowman, Georgia, attended Shorter College and graduated from the Atlanta Conservatory of Music, and taught music in the Decatur area for many years.
