Scope and content:

The collection consists of one typed, 67-page notebook of minutes for the meetings of the administrators of the James Monroe Smith estate. The administrators of the estate were Andrew C. Erwin, Nat D. Arnold, L. K. Smith and later James F. Shehane. Topics discussed by the administrators included sale of property, notes held by Smith, indebtedness to Smith, rental property owned by Smith, tax returns, Dunlap Railroad, College Park tenants, stock, and selling the Smithonia Plantation.

Biographical / historical:

James Monroe Smith (1839-1915) was an Oglethorpe County, Georgia millionaire farmer and merchant whose plantation, Smithonia, comprised about 20,000 acres. He never married and after his death many people laid claim to his estate.
