Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of two notebooks kept by Prosper Jules Alphonse Berckmans of Fruitland Nurseries (Augusta, Georgia) from 1861-1915. Volume 1 contains drawings of grapes and grape leaves, some partly in watercolor; for some varieties, handwritten notes identify southern growers as Berckmans' source, including Dr. A.P. Wylie, G. Speth, J.A. Rion, and Dr. S.J. Kenworthy. The volume also includes newspaper clippings and letters from other growers. Volume 2 includes drawings of peaches, apples, pears, plums, oranges, tangerines, strawberries and pecans; and clippings, advertisements for nurseries, and letters from growers.
