Julia B. Hazelwood was a native of Elbert County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Benjamin Doizer and Linnie Sue Brown. She taught in the Thomaston Elementary System for 37 years, coming to Athens in 1975. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial DAMES, Magna Carta, Daughters of the War of 1812 and the Friendship Presbyterian Church of Athens.
