Scope and content:

The collection consists of a Civil War diary kept by James McCulloch from August 1862-April 1963. McCulloch writes from Jacksboro, Tennessee; Barboursville; Richmond, Lexington, Danville, Harrodsburg, Frankfort, Georgetown, and Bryantsville, Kentucky; Dalton, Georgia; Mobile, Alabama; and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Journal entries regard troop movements, weather, food and water rations, and fighting. McCulloch also writes about encounters with secessionists; his frequent sickness and experience of the Army's medical services; and accidental shootings amongst the Confederates.

Biographical / historical:

James McCulloch (1835-1902) was from Columbia, South Carolina. McCulloch attended the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta, Georgia, and served in the 34th Infantry Regiment of the Georgia Volunteers during the Civil War.
