Scope and content:

This collection contains a roster of general and field officers under the command of Brigadier General Henry R. Jackson in the Confederate Army in northwest Virginia. The list of twenty-one officers includes name, regiment, and date of commission.

Biographical / historical:

Henry R. Jackson (1820-1898) was a Brigadier General in the Confederate States of America Army. Born in Athens, Georgia, he went on to graduate from Yale University as a member of the Skull and Bones in 1839. He served in the Mexican-American War and a diplomat to the Austrian Empire before the Civil War. He enlisted in 1861 and served as a judge in the Confederate courts. Later, he became a brigadier general, leading troops in the Western Virginia campaign. In late 1861, he took on the leadership position of the state militia of Georgia. In 1863, he returned to military service in the Atlanta Campaign. He was captured, held as a prisoner of war, and paroled in 1865.
