Scope and content:

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. Phinizy Spalding, a longtime history professor at the University of Georgia. Types of materials in the collection include family materials; correspondence and subject files; scholarly activity and association files; many manuscripts of his writngs as well as research and teaching materials; several hundred documents regarding historic preservation and architecture in Athens and Georgia; materials regarding the management of the Lucy Cobb Institute; and printed material and maps.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Billups Phinizy Spalding (1930-1994), resided in Athens, Georgia and was a history professor at the College of Charleston and the University of Georgia from 1966-1994. He was an author of multiple books, served as editor of the Georgia Historical Quarterly, and was active in historic preservation, resided in Athens, Georgia.
