The collection consists of correspondence between Richard Harwell and the Caldwells, as well as various clippings.

Biographical / historical:

Richard Barksdale Harwell (1915-1988) was a librarian, bibliographer. He graduated from Emory University and received an honorary doctorate from New England College, and worked in several university libraries including the University of Georgia. Harwell was also active in several professional associations, including the Association of College Research Libraries, Southeastern Library Association, and the American Library Association.

Erskine Caldwell (1903-1987) was an American author, most famous for his books about the South that centered on issues of poverty, racism, and other social issues. He wrote God's Little Acre and Tobacco Road. He lived throughout the country, but mainly focused on the South in his writings.
