Scope and content:

The collection consists of five (reproductions of) typescripts by John J. Roche titled: Forty years after, The soldier and the state: the Summa Arya encounters Hollywood, The place of Maastricht in European military history, To save and defend the people: essays on the philosophy of European military history, and Kindred spirits: an introduction to the philosophy of European military history for combat soldiers. The typescripts concern Roche's activities in World War II. The place of Maastricht in European military history is a commentary regarding the state of the world almost fifty years after Roche's participation in World War II.

Biographical / historical:

John J. Roche served in the U.S Army as a rifleman, scout, squad leader, and then prisoner of war during World War II. After leaving the Army, Roche was assigned to the Headquarters Detachment of the School Troops, The Infantry School, Fort Bennington, Georgia.
