Scope and content:

The collection consists of correspondence of the Brown and McNeill families of Roberson County, North Carolina from 1859-1866. Letters discuss news of friends or family, crops, weather, family members fighting in the war, and information about those killed in the war. Letter mention the Kate McLaurin steamboat explosion (1860).

Biographical / historical:

John A. Brown (1800-1835) and Margaret McNeill (1801-1851) had four children Elinor Jane, Milton James, Timothy Dwight, and Euphemia Anne. The letters document the lives of Milton James Brown (1833-1864), Euphemia Anne (Annie) Brown (1843-1918), George Washington Stone married to Annie, Elinor (Ellen) Jane Hamilton, Susan (Sue) Jane Donahoo wife of Milton, Maggie daughter of Milton and Sue, George C. NcNeill a cousin, and Blanch (Bonnie) McNeill a cousin.
