Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of 14 German posters, 1 diary transcript, 1 Nazi flag-banner, and 3 playbills from performances in Heidelberg, Germany. All of these items were collected by Dr. Henry King Stanford during his studies at the University of Heidelberg between September of 1936 and July of 1937.

The accession folder for this collection also contains Stanford's narrative translations of the posters, as well as photocopies of three postcards and one Coca-Cola Nazi-era beer mat.

Biographical / historical:

Henry King Stanford (1916-2009) received his B.A. and M.A.from Emory University, an M.S. from the University of Denver, and his PhD from New York University. Stanford served as president of Georgia Southwestern College in Americus in 1948, and as president of several other colleges and universities until Dr. Stanford served as Interim President of the University of Georgia from 1986-1987.
