Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of drafts of manuscripts; drafts and proofs of The Eternal Fire, and annotated screenplays of several film and stage productions that Willingham either wrote or collaborated on. The papers also contain some correspondence to and from other writers, agents, and publishers. In additional, there are unmailed letters by Willingham, written mainly to vent his opinion on a particular matter or situation, not with the intention of mailing them. Included are the annotated screenplays of several film and stage productions that Willingham either wrote or collaborated on, such as The Graduate, Little Big Man, Patton, and Paths of Glory.

Biographical / historical:

Calder Baynard Willingham (1922-1995) was a novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He was born in Atlanta and grew up in Rome, Georgia. After completing his education at the University of Virginia, Willingham moved to New York City, where he associated with many of the era's top writers. He was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2008. For additional information see Calder Willingham in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

Acquisition information:
The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library purchased the papers of novelist and screenwriter Calder Willingham in February of 1986.
