The collection consists of letters written to Lena Martin dated 1918, and 1942-1945. Letters are mainly from Dr. Edward Dawson (referred to also by his nickname of "Dr. Dorsey") and Leo Lucker, and regard packages, family matters, and current events. The collection also includes a copy of a letter dated 1865, a photograph of Battalion Staff, an issue of Current Events dated 1915, and a funeral announcement of William II dated 1918.

Lena Emerson Martin, a native of Coweta County, Georgia, taught chemistry at the Lucy Cobb Institute and Georgia State College for Women. At the start of World War II, she went to work as a chemist for the Davidson Chemical Company in Baltimore in its explosives division. After the war she worked as a chemist with the U. S. Rubber Company in Hogansville, Georgia.
