Scope and content:

The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, photographs, glass plate negatives, and printed material. The correspondence includes letters from Sir George Smith Gibbes to his daughter Elizabeth Gibbes (Chapman) in which he discusses family news, British politics of the 1830s and 1840s, and the safety of railroad travel. Harvey family correspondence contains letters between Elizabeth Harvey and Thomas C. Harvey, some written during his service as a lighthouse inspector and Civil Engineer-Assistant Surveyor in the Bahamas; letters between Thomas and his son (Samuel) George Harvey discusses George's activities as a civil engineer; and letters between George and his sister Louisa Harvey (Miller) mainly pertaining to family news and social events. The diaries (1870-1871) were written by Louisa and contain brief entries on daily activities and cash accounts, while the notebooks include recipes, remedies, and inventories.

Biographical / historical:

Thomas Chapman Harvey married Elizabeth Gibbes (d. 1871) daughter of Sir George S. Gibbes. Their children included (Samuel) George Harvey (d. 1873) and Louisa H.E. Harvey.
