The collection consists of correspondence between Lillian Smith and her publisher, W.W. Norton & Company, particularly with George P. Brockway and Storer B. Lunt. The letters discuss distribution of her works, publicity to sell her books, and reviews of her works. Also includes letters from others relating to the distribution of or reaction to her works.

Biographical / historical:

Lillian Smith (1897-1966), author, lecturer, and human rights advocate, was born in Jasper County, Florida, and resided in Rabun County, Georgia. Her best known fiction piece was the controversial 1944 novel Strange Fruit.
