Born on August 24, 1871, Steadman Vincent Sanford was the child of Elizabeth Steadman and Charles Vincent Sanford. At age 24, in 1895, he married Grace McClatchey. The couple would have four children: Shelton Palmer, Grace Devereaux, Charles Steadman, and Homer Reynolds. Grace would die at age 9 in 1907, while the others survived into adulthood.
In 1890, before his marriage, Sanford received his undergraduate degree from Mercer University. He then pursued further education at the University of Chicago, the University of Berlin in Germany, and Oxford University in England. He taught in Marietta from 1890 to 1892 and was the principal of Marietta High School from 1892 to 1897. He was later the superintendent of all Marietta schools from 1897 to 1903.
Sanford started teaching English at the University of Georgia in 1903. He founded and led the Henry Grady School of Journalism from 1921 to 1927. He was a dean from 1927 to 1932. At the pinnacle of his career, Sanford was the president of the University of Georgia from 1921 to 1927.
