The collection consists of two letters: dated Augusta, July 10, 1874, "Col. C. C. Jones," signed "C. J. Jenkins," regarding Thomas Norwood'ss speech, Dr. Lipscomb, and other business matters; dated Summerville (or, Summersville), November 3, 1880, "My dear Col.," signed "C. J. Jenkins," regarding legislative matters.

Biographical / historical:

"Charles Jones Jenkins (1805-1883), most noted for his defiance of military authority while governor of Reconstruction Georgia from 1865 to 1868, was also a prominent political figure in the Whig Party during the antebellum period and a justice of the state supreme court during the Civil War (1861-65). Jenkins County, in east central Georgia, is named in his honor. Jenkins was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, on January 6, 1805. The family moved to Georgia in 1816. After two years at Franklin College (later the University of Georgia), he graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, in 1824."
