Scope and content:

The University of Georgia Literary Societies collection consists of records from the Demosthenian Literary Society and the Phi Kappa Literary Society. Predominant materials include minutes, letterbooks, correspondence, and artifacts.

Biographical / historical:

The Demosthenian Literary Society was formed in 1803 by the first graduating class of the Franklin College, making it the oldest student organization at the University of Georgia. Demosthenian's rival debate organization, the Phi Kappa Literary Society formed in 1820. Both societies are still active on campus and engage in a lively intersociety debate annually.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into three series: Demosthenian, Phi Kappa and Demosthenian/Phi Kappa.
