Biographical / historical:

In 1968, the Athens Unit of the Georgia Retardation Center at the University of Georgia opened to provide short-term residential care and day programs. The facility was jointly managed by the Georgia Department of Public Health and the University with responsibilities for manpower development and training, research in mental retardation, and public education.
