Francis E. Johnstone served as the Chairman of the Division of Horticulture, which was a unit within the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia. He was heavily involved in the creation of the University of Georgia Botanical Garden (later the State Botanical Garden of Georgia), serving as the first director until his retirement in 1978.
