The Harriette Austin papers consists of three series: Creative Writing (1970s-2008), Personal Materials (1979-2016) and Photographs (1917-2007). The Creative Writing series consists of Harriette Austin's writings and manuscripts generated over the years by her Creative Writing students. The Personal Materials series includes her Vita, Obituary, correspondence and other materials. The third series holds photographs which date from 1917 through 2007. They mostly feature photographs of her Creative Writing students.

Harriette Austin was a writer who, starting in 1974 and running through 2009, taught popular Creative Writing classes to Athenians at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The Harriette Austin Writers Conference was founded in 1994 by one of her students, UGA professor Charles Conner, in her honor. This nationally recognized society brought agents and publishers to aspiring writers. In 2003, the Georgia's Writers' Association presented their Lifetime Achievement Award to her for "helping aspiring writers." Ms. Austin passed away in 2016 at the age of 96.
