Background

Scope and content:

This collection includes numerous rack cards, flyers, posters, newsletters and news clippings concerning activities and events connected with the Lamar Dodd School of Art. There are also interior and exterior photographic shots of the School of Art from 1962. Of particular interest are instructional slides (1929-1989) featuring the art work of Lamar Dodd and Abbot Pattison, the artist best known for creating the Iron Horse sculpture.

Biographical / historical:

The University of Georgia School of Art was originally founded in 1925 as part of the State College of Agriculture and officially became part of the University during the reorganization of 1932. By the late 1950s the school had experienced such a surge in growth that it required a new home. In 1962, a new home for the art school that featured a revolutionary design opened its doors and in 1995 was renamed as the Lamar Dodd School of Art. This building served as the main location of the Visual Arts program until 2008 when the program moved into a new building on East Campus.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into two series: 1. Exhibitions and Events and 2. Photographs and Slides.
