Background

Scope and content:

The Tate Society papers contain files documenting their activities from their beginning in 1990, as well as materials related to Dean Tate himself. Of particular interest in the latter catagory is a transcript of one of Tate's renowned campus tours, seemingly corrected and annotated by Tate himself.

For some years materials related to budget or special activities have been filed by the Society in the annual activies file, rather than being separated into their own folders.

Biographical / historical:

Founded in 1990, the William Tate Honorary Soceity annually recognizes twelve women and twelve men from the current freshman class at the Univeristy of Georgia for their scholarship, leadership, and service to the University. Initiates are chosen who, "best exemplify the qualities that were possessed by Dean William Tate," the well-beloved and long-term Dean of Men at the University. in adidtion, the Society states that its purpose, "beyond recognizing young leaders will be to spread both the reality and the lore of a great Georgian," and to serve to, "become a living memoiral to a man who endowed his university with a life of unmatched example for those to come after him."
