Scope and content:

The collection primarily documents remodeling plans for the Reynolds mansion at Sapelo Island, Georgia. The mansion is sometimes referred to under the name of its previous owner, Howard Coffin.

Biographical / historical:

The historic Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island served as the Spalding Plantation Manor from 1810 until the Civil War. It was purchased by Detroit automotive engineer Howard Coffin in 1912. In 1934 tobacco heir Richard Reynolds purchased the property in 1934 and allowed the University of Georgia to use the facilities for marine research prior to the Marine Institute's establishment. Since 1974 the estate has been managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The University of Georgia Marine Institute (UGAMI) was established with its own facilities in 1953.
