Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes memoranda from William Prokasy regarding salary equity; a summary of gender and racial equity in faculty salary, raises, and promotions; and the final report on the monitoring of salary equity.

Biographical / historical:

In 1989, President Knapp initiated a study to examine salaries for institutional bias against women, which suggested a substantial bias. An allocation of funds was made available to reduce the bias against women. In 1993, the Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs conducted a statistical analysis to determine if institutional bias existed for female and African American faculty. Additionally, promotion and merit raise histories were studied and there was no evidence of institutional bias.
