Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of materials that document the RDC's involvement with both the southern part of the state and the University of Georgia. Biographical / historical:

The Rural Development Center (RDC) located in Tifton, Georgia is an outreach center for the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. The primary focus is on the development of the economic potential of the state's agriculture. Agricultural specialists housed at the Center form the link between the University and the country agent and farmer. The Center also serves as a conference center offering educational programs designed to help provide solutions to identified state and national issues that encompass the College of Agriculture priorities with an emphasis on those issues critical to rural revitalization. The RDC program is directed toward full development and utilization of the social and economic potential of the region and state.

The Center's program consists of four objectives: 1. Increase agricultural and forest production efficiency through continued research in agricultural and forest production and the broad application of research findings. 2. Advance development of marketing and utilization of farm and forest commodities. 3. Aid community developments and solve problems concerning how and where people will lives and relate to each other. 4. Further manpower training and utilization to provide more skilled workers in various types of agribusiness that are needed in the area, and to assist general farm workers to prepare for new forms of employment as farm technology takes over their former jobs.
